Background
Recogin (Representative Council of Ghanaian Organizations in the Netherlands) was founded in response to two major events in 1992: the Bijlmer disaster and Operation Goof. At the time, the West African, particularly Ghanaian, community lacked a unified platform to engage with Dutch society and institutions.
- Since its inception, Recogin has grown into an umbrella organization representing over 40 West African, mostly Ghanaian, organizations.
- It participates in local, regional, and national platforms while providing services to educational institutions, local governments, and healthcare bodies.
- Today, over 90% of Recogin’s member organizations are based in Amsterdam, with others in Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Eindhoven.

Over the years, Recogin has grown into a full-fledged entity providing critical support to its affiliated organizations.
Its services include organizational development, project management, expertise enhancement, and information dissemination. The organization fosters strong connections through annual meetings, newsletters, social media, regional gatherings, and direct engagement with stakeholders.
Recogin actively participates in initiatives that promote social inclusion, integration, and community welfare. It has taken on a pivotal role in advocating for West African communities, particularly in Amsterdam Southeast, by developing, organizing, and executing programs that facilitate participation in Dutch society.
In 2001, Recogin took a significant step toward professionalization by establishing the Recogin Foundation, its executive body. This foundation manages daily operations, administration, and project execution, ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability and effectiveness.
